Tobacco
Tobacco was smoked as early as 5000 B.C. The native Americans hove grown and traded for many years. When the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus sailed to the new world he was given the gift of tobacco from the natives. The dried leaves were not thought to be worth anything and were thrown into the ocean. Not until later did he learn that the leaves were pries possession to them. It was used for medicine and religion. (Institute of Medicine)
